OUR CRY FOR KEN SARO WIWA

It is today that my father, Ken Saro-Wiwa, will be executed.

My mother and I take quick steps away from our home, gravitating towards the execution grounds with our hearts sunken to our heavy feet. It all seems surreal and I still hold out hope that my family will wake up from the nightmare and Dad will be home drinking tea in his favourite chair again. But mother’s tears are real. I felt them burn my skin the early hours of this morning as we kept watch for sunrise. They were as real as the coolness of the iron gate we just opened. We are here. The gallows are ready and the air is stagnant.

“Sadiq Abacha, it’s time for Salat. Tasowa.” It deeply bothers me that my mother bothers me with religion. A young boy doesn’t ask for much when he wishes to sleep till much later than 5am, I believe. Now here I am, tossing and turning unable to find the extra sleep I long for. I roll sleepy legs off the bed and trudge to the bathroom. I bend over the sink and welcome the refreshing cool water brings—I feel unusually warm and uneasy this morning. Sigh. I might as well count sheep to sleep.

I can see Dad and the other men file out of the building. Mother starts to wail all over again as she sinks into the dust. I gather her and my broken heart into trembling arms– it is happening. Dad is in the middle and he is careful to look in our direction with brave eyes. His eyes are full of faith, his death clothes are injustice and his lips are a firm line of finality. I cannot hear what the pastor is saying to Dad and the other men above mother’s heart-wrenching cries, above the unsympathetic barks of the soldiers for mother to be silent. It really is happening. Dear God, make it stop.

Whoever said this counting sheep business helps anyone sleep anyway. I’m so upset with mother for waking me this particular morning I hope she cannot find sleep either. Not that it would wreck her as much as it is giving me a nasty headache but still…it will be something. I might as well take a bath now and prepare for our trip to Liberia. I want to go with father this time, taking long strides beside him as his dear son. I have been craving a change of scenery since our trip to the United States. I’ll have to be satisfied with these short trips till I go to University.

Dad is blindfolded and has his hands and legs securely tied. They are putting the noose around his neck now and the world has stopped revolving. Mother’s face is burrowed deep into my jalamia, her broken sobs muffled by my body. She can’t bear to look; she wants to wake up from the nightmare—this collective nightmare.

One!

A soldier has his hand ready on the trapdoor lever.

Two!

The soap bar dropped just as I lathered my face. I hiss between clenched teeth as I bend to retrieve it.

Three!

The trapdoor falls open as the world starts to end. Mother’s scream pierces the morning sky as Dad struggles hopelessly against the noose.

Just as I take one blind step towards the showerhead to rinse my face, the bathroom shifts and my head collides with the wall. “ARGH!”

I stay in the dust with my mother till hope dies.

Gumsu is such an idiot. She is laughing because the doctor put me in a brace for the next one month.

CONVERSATION WITH PAPA.............1

We sat around the evening fire warming our cold scaling skin, dried like a smoked tilapia fish from the harmatan breeze. My joy knew no bound as i sat beside him, he was constantly cracking his knuckles and spitting into the burning fire, his eyebrows were greyed, he was aged in wisdom and in physique. I listened with rapt attention as he recalled the beautiful memories of his boyhood, when Lagos/Ibadan expressway was not bloodthirsty, when children played on the streets without the fear of rapist or kidnappers, the days when you do not have to rob a bank to eat good food, suddenly he sighed and murmured the good old days.
I could not longer stomach the storm raging in my belly, i was quick to ask what happened to those days? I screamed loud, we are constantly being raped by your generation, the nascent democracy is stunted, our beloved nation is on the edge of precipice, she has become a theater of absurdity, a den of corruption with the world wildest breed of profligate politicians, our hospitals are inhospitable, our universities has become an abattoir, our roads a death trap, he watched and listen as i tried to rewrite the Christian holy book of lamentation.
He spat into the fire again as he called out to the little boy and begged him to fetch us more firewood, he coughed and spat into the fire for the umpteen times.
He requested for the cold cup of water I had with me, that had become almost hot, he collected it and thanked me, he tried to lure me into another discussion on the benefits of warm water, I kept mum, he took a gaze at me , and he immediately sensed my glaring lack of interest in that health talk.
At this moment, his voice was becoming faint, i moved closer to this sage whom is the patriarch of my genealogy,  with tears welling up in my eyes, i asked him how do we come out of this "wahala"?
He gave me a stern look and asked me what i knew about Switzerland and the Swiss model of government...............................................................................................................................
I racked my brains immediately to avoid a break in this fertile intellectual intercourse between two generations, i was quick to recollect my previous conversation with grandma whom we fondly called "iya agba" before she sailed across river Styx... To be continued

NIGERIA’S GAME OF THRONES : 10 Nigerian Leaders who will shapen the 2015 general elections

In no particular order we have assembled politicians whose actions ,influence, ambitions and affiliations vibrates the Nigerian political landscape. These politicians are the people to watch as the electioneering season for 2015 General elections draws closer.

1.Rt Hon Aminu Tambuwal: The speaker of the federal House of Representative will be a truly national candidate from the northern origin if all these rumors about him being courted by the opposition party APC, to cross over and run for president under its platform is true. His performance in the lower house has raised  him many supporters.  In reality, he won’t be a newcomer if he crosses to the APC, he was formerly in ANPP- a merging member of the APC- before joining PDP. In addition, he became Speaker through the structure he gained from the opposition. More so, under his leadership, legislators under the factional  new PDP have successfully defected to the APC. A candidate of Tambuwal’s nature possesses a strong charisma that can dilute the typical resentment that some Southerners have about core Northern leadership. Tambuwal will be 49years old in 2015 and may be the youngest of all likely heavyweight presidential aspirants. This is an advantage in a clime with many young voters.

2. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar: A man with nine lives. A veteran of so many wars with presidents. The most evident one was with his ex-boss, the former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The former Vice President of Nigeria seems to be mustering his last energies to seek another shot at the presidency before retiring. Age we know does not seem to be on his side. He played a decisive and prominent role in the factionalism that hit PDP, his former Party. One of the consequence of that rebellion is the Bloc shift of five PDP governors in one day and the mass defection at the National Assembly members to APC. This play out according to political strategists is likely a signal to end the PDP's monopoly as the only national party in Nigeria. At present, we are faced with one reality , and it is that PDP may never remain the One united force anymore--at least before 2015.

3. Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi: The Governor of Rivers state and the Chairman of a faction of the Nigeria Governor's Forum has suddenly become a formidable force to reckon with ahead of the general elections. Thanks to Mr President who didn't manage the 'home' conflict very well. Of all the structures to guard diligently, the Home zone of Niger Delta should have been the priority of  Mr President. But as it stands now, with Governor Amaechi’s charisma and his grip on Rivers state, there seems to be a looming danger that can rock the President's boat right under his nose. Amaechi at the moment has been fingered to be bracing up for a Vice Presidential slot which no doubt will have to battle with the President's ambition. The interesting thing about all the conflict is that pro-Amaechi have reduced the battle to Rivers vs Bayelsa. A good thing for Amaechi’s camp and Rivers as a whole who records have it to have given the President his largest ‘state’ vote of 2.1 million in the last general elections in 2011.

4.Governor Sule Lamido: The Jigawa governor became a force to reckon with following the rumored endorsement for the race to become Nigeria's first citizen by Former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Although, the claim was doused by party stalwarts, the relationship between the two suggests that the claim is very close to the truth. And Lamido has used the opportunity of the support he enjoys from the Rtd General as a means to air his views and criticize the party's leadership when necessary . He is in fact one of the G7- the caucus of the new PDP. Although five governors out of the seven have moved to APC , Govenor Lamido remains a member of the PDP.  And he may be staying behind for three reasons; first, it may be because of his son’s money laundering trial. Two, he may be standing back to contest the party primaries with President Jonathan or Lobbying to replace Namadi Sambo as GEJ’s running mate. Lastly, he may just have given up his ambition and acting as a top spy in order to actualize the ‘Northern Agenda.’ But with the fresh rumor that three more PDP Governors set to cross over to APC, it may just be the announcement of  Lamido’s  voyage.

5.  Former President Olusegun Obasanjo: Jonathan's presidency today is as a result of the unequalled support of former President Obasanjo. Although, President Jonathan has relegated him in the scheme of things, Chief Obasanjo still possesses an army of 'boys' that remain  ever loyal to his call and course. This is evident in the colossal influence that he still wields within the polity. And to write him off  in PDP's power tussle, is to sign one's political 'death' warrant.
This is a fact that even his adversary knows very well. For few months now OBJ has been in the news for either writing an Open (indicting) Letter or making anti-Jonathan remarks. Come 2015 OBJ will test his popularity again, this time ,perhaps, by endorsing a candidate as he did in the last general elections in 2011.

6. President Goodluck Jonathan: The sitting President of Nigeria, no doubt, is at the centre of the 2015 presidential elections. He will remain the favourite in this contest because he is the man to beat. Like the defending champion returningg to the ring to defend his title, GEJ is preparing for 2015 elections. Although, it is widely perceived that the alledged 'one term pact' he signed in 2011 with the governors and the reality that he has performed below expectations are the reasons behind the resentments towards him by both party members and a large number of the population including his political Godfather- Former President Obasanjo. He is still the most powerful politician at present being the President and Commander-in-Chief. Thus, whatever way it goes, he will play a very active role in who wins in the 2015 election.

7. Former Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu: The former Governor of Lagos state is the most vibrant voice of the opposition in Nigeria. His quest for a viable opposition inspired championing the formation of the All Progressive Congress (APC). The party formed with the merging of the three big opposition parties (of ACN, CPC and ANPP). There is a new addition to the merger list- the New PDP. His influence in the South West region is a big plus and a leverage ahead of 2015. His party is in charge of five states out of the six states that make up the South West. The Jagaban is bracing up well to capture power for his party the APC in what the people perceives to be the "operation wrestle power from PDP in 2015". His political weight will be a factor in who finally wins the poll.

8. General Ibrahim Babangida: As a former Military President, a PDP stakeholder and a Nigerian of the Northern origin, IBB as a leader will be a voice in 2015. His influence still spans across the Niger and is perceived across sectors of Business, Politics and the military, etc. IBB already admitted he's no longer contesting but we can be assured he would be ready to give support to the Northern agitation of power shift in 2015.

9. General Muhammadu Buhari: This is still the only Presidential candidate that gives the opposition sleepless nights because of his reputation as  an honest and disciplined leader. But age might just be reason the former CPC presidential candidate will throw in the towel for 2015. However, his influence and credibility will still play a vital role in the weight that the opposition pulls. Gen Buhari seems to be the most influential man from the North and his voice will echo power come 2015.

10. Chief Tony Anenih: Despite the Edo polls' humiliating defeat that deflated his ego and   influence as  the invincible Godfather of Edo politics, Chief Anenih still enjoys the goodwill of President Jonathan. Mr Fix it as he's often referred to is ready to justify all the kind gesture that the present administration have bestowed on him. Presently, he holds two relevant positions. First, as the Chairman of the Board of Trustee of his party the PDP and secondly as the Board chairman of Nigerian Ports Authority. With these two positions, it has been alledged, it is expected of  Mr Fix it to gather both economic and political returns formidable enough to actualize Jonathan's 2015 ambition.

As the politics and politricks continue we should see a few adjustments in this list.

The Ejigbo saga: The power of social media

There is the saying that ‘injustice any where is injustice everywhere.’’ In this light, The Ejigbo market saga makes this assertion ever more relevant in our collective consciousness. As Nigerians and the rest of  world saw the horrific video of mans in inhumanity to man, many have drawn their own conclusion to this event depending on which ever side of the divide you may stand. To this end therefore, the main thrust of this of this piece is to remind us that social media is truly a potent tool to fight injustice wherever we find it.
When Aristotle declared that ......man without law is but a beast unto man..... He was not only talking about the nature of man as it were but also describing the way man ought to function in a just and equitable society using the instrumentality of the Law as that parameter to guide her behaviour.
In today’s modern society, Nigeria in particular and Africa in general, the Law still functions as described above. But a lot will agree that the same Law meant for every one seem not to hold certain powerful oligarchy accountable when they do wrong. Therefore bringing the question again, is the Law the last resort of the ordinary man who feels injustice has been done to him?
This is where the Ejigbo saga once again reminds us all that injustice can be done, but can also be corrected because we are all watching and saying this thing is wrong through the instrumentality of the social media. The social media is gradually becoming a very potent platform for people to state their case and let the world be the judge.  The Ejigbo drama tells it all that the police would have paid lip service to this case but for the persistent attitude Nigerians who saw those victims de-humanize beyond imagination and they all came out in mass calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice using the various available social media platform to air their views, hence the police could not keep silent any more even the IG, the Lagos state house of assembly all came out in strong condemnation of this event. This is not to say that the various women NGOs did not do their job but that the social media was even at the fore front in pushing their fight making it more relevant.
Africa has been a place where so many atrocities are committed and kept in the dark all in the name of cultures with both victims bearing the scares and perpetrators walking free. This cannot be the case anymore; people must be courageous enough to tell the world what is going wrong in their neighbourhood. All they require is just a click away and the world will hear your story.
The social media will be more powerful only if we use it to tell the truth and those who love to be in the dark will remain in the dark because they cannot stand the power of light for where there is light, justice can be found..........this is what the social media brings with it.

Open Letter to Young Entrepreneurs; More Branding, less bragging in 2014.

This is the Generation Flux. The Millennials who graduated from college to meet unavailable jobs. Following the track of Steve Jobs and co, we are faced with a "Grey collar" job destiny. This piece is to encourage young entrepreneurs as we forge ahead in the harsh Corporate-Creative world.

In any corner of the world you find yourself, just look around, you are likely to see an advert. Either it is a sign board, neon sign or poster looking towards the road or staring at you. They all have something to say. Most times they are asking you to choose a product or persuade you to buy something. How strong is the voice from that advert or how depicting is the picture? Potent enough to make you opt for what they’re advertising? Always put yourself in that shoe if you want to win customers to your product.

Look up , try notice the girl walking towards you in the opposite direction. Perhaps, when she gets closer she may be wearing a custom made top with inscriptions of a company or say, a brand. Is she another sign board? Just don't be surprised the day you come across a new church sign board branded by a company. Adverts are everywhere now and they run via several channels.

The world today is flooded with ad campaigns and product placements. It is a global village and everybody is marketing something whether they are conscious of it or not, including you.

However, despite huge amounts spent on ads and packaging, most businesses are not getting the proportional returns. You should be surprised to know that despite averaging over 3 billion dollars per annum on advertising, General Motors still went down with the economic crunch.

Bill Gates was quoted to have made an insightful remark about General Motors . "If GM had kept up with technology like computer industry has, we would all be driving Dollar25 cars that got 1000 MPG", he said.

"Is advertising not meant to improve and strengthen business?" you may want to ask. But adverts without putting other things in order can as well pass for noise.  It is not enough to shout yourself into the market square but is it for the right reasons?

Adverts don’t need noise to register in the mind of consumers. Deliver on brand promises and you will be their choice.

Sincerely, the rate of ad exposures to people is alarming, there are dozens of brand to choose from, most of which have sub-standard quality. But how do we differentiate even now that ads thrive on puffery to influence Purchase Intention (PI)? Brand promise and trust over time comes to rescue here. The promise must be conveyed in soft, modest and value- driven appeal.

The era of ad campaigns like "We are the soul and body of Entertainment", "The best pizza money can buy"
etc seems to have overstayed welcome. Now, advertising should have altruistic approach and ad messages should be essentially subliminal. People prefer soft appeals to bragging.

In fact, companies need to focus more on quality service delivery and then carve out captions from the user, client or customer experience.(i.e seeing things from the user perspective.)

As Kathy Heasley puts it: "A brand is two words : the 'Promise' you telegraph , and the 'Experience' you deliver"

Then when your company ad runs, it serves as a voice to the feelings and experience that customers have after using your products. That registers better in a customer's mind. And can help better to figure out cognitive dissonance.

Standing out without bragging pays off in all ramifications, you are not under pressure to live up to what you have claimed. In fact the radar shifts to your customers-- the ones who keep you in business. They 're patronizing you, not because they like your face or company logo but because you fulfil a need or solve a problem.

That is what your operations, ad campaigns, marketing and research should focus more on and wait for the Awards, customer base expansion and equity worth to declare you as the best.

According to Robert Kiyosaki, citing the US SEAL who gained popularity after killing Osama Bin- laden as an example, expressed the justification that the best brands, over time, have been the ones who don’t make noise but rather becomes more concerned about creating more value for its customers/clients.  In the end, they have success to prove their excellence.

Hear what Steve Jobs said about his company, Apple. "We do not say anything about future products. We work on them in secret, then we announce them."

BACK HOME

When MTN first came to Nigeria, they started with "The better connection" later to "the best connection" and now it is "everywhere you go". Perhaps it took them time to realise that most people choose the network with a coverage in their area. In a town or community where MTN's network covered there were alot of MTN customers. Same for other networks too.  A couple of weeks back we were in a village in Delta (ofagbe) where  MTN has no coverage, the major network providers there were Airtel and Glo. My colleagues who were hitherto MTN addicts gladly queued to collect and register for a free Airtel sim card.

Thus, changing environment may as well mean changing network. You hear people hold conversations like "Glo is the only good network in my new area so I changed my line".

So when people opt for a network at the expense of the other or load credit on a particular sim rather the other, it is because of the quality of service experienced.

Perhaps that was what influenced the Network Portability project instructed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). That will sharpen the power of choice. If a network is not serving a customer well, he or she can make a switch to another service provider without losing his telephone number.

As young entrepreneurs who may not have enough resources to launch massive ads campaign and marketing promotions you can still make a difference and charm customers by concentrating on quality service delivery and then run ads on concepts depicting value-expressive and functional (ads) appeals.

Good advice, focus on Branding your product or services and every other thing would follow suit. Don't fall for the Bragging trick!
